THE HOUR OF THE STAR
THE HOUR OF THE STAR, or A LIGHT, TEARFUL STORY
Macabea, a girl living in Rio de Janeiro; and a writer, a man who wants to tell her story. The Hour of The Star, or A Light, Tearful Story is a play based on the novella by the Brazilian author Clarice Lispector, exploring the themes of individuality, identity and humanity.
Macabea is an almost anonymous figure, the same as any poor girl living in a big city and trying to survive from day to day. Macabea meets her first love, she has dreams of her future, she works in an office as a typist and dreams of a career as a film actress. Lispector asks what in her life actually demands to be told? Is it that which we have forgotten? Or that which is all too familiar to us? Whose story is this, in the end?
The play is a skilful, fascinating study of the art of narration; it uses a masterly change of perspective in telling the story of a poor girl in today’s world through the eyes a male narrator. It is an intense, poetical work of art, speaking of the human dignity of every life in our times.
Clarice Lispector (1925-1977) is one of Latin America’s most renowned authors. The Third Space has gained the rights for the world's first performance of this work.
