The Third Space is a multi-arts group aiming at stimulating an active dialogue between the arts, science and research, which will highlight socially and philosophically significant issues. 3 T produces plays, installations, exhibitions and performance art.

3 T does not aim at any fixed structures. We seek movement. We extend our group according to the needs of each production.

3 T is a vehicle journeying into the unknown. In philosophical discourse the concept of the third space is associated with a critique of Western thinking and its fundamental attitudes. The third space emphasizes reciprocity – things that are perceived as opposites influence each other. The third space can be associated with identity, which is regarded as a continuous process rather than a fixed thing. Individuals are seen both in terms of their origins and in relation to where they have ended up, and to where they are going. This is also connected to professional identity.

The third space can also be a physical space – a situation and an opportunity that opens up between, for example, the audience and a performance. The essential thing in these encounters is that both parties influence each other. This is what we wish to explore.

Our points of departure include the communality of theatre and its direct interaction with the audience. We are seeking a more committed viewing process. We want to challenge the audience to find a new kind of relationship with the work of art.

3 T wants to create opportunities that support the divergent, the new and the previously unidentified.

In 2011, the repertoire of The Third Space consists of performances of The Hour of the Star and Animalis. Both of these performances are part of the Counter-History event that will be organized in the fall 2011. This event ties arts and science together in a unique way. In addition, the event will include a film festival of Trinh T. Minh-ha’s movies (October 15th – 18th), as well as a fourday open seminar (October 20th – 23rd). The Hour of the Star will be performed again during this festival.

The performances and the Counter-History event are part of Turku 2011, European Capital of Culture Year. Read more from the pages ”Repertoire” and ”Counter-History”!
